Chesapeake Bay Sea Glass Talk at Calvert Marine Museum

Solomons, Md. -- Richard LaMotte, recognized sea glass expert and author of Pure Sea Glass, returns to the Calvert Marine Museum on Sunday, January 15 at 2 p.m. Bring your own sea glass for identification and learn everything you want to know about these treasures. Jewelry artists will be on hand with their handcrafted sea glass creations and the museum store will feature many new sea glass pieces available for purchase.
Sea glass is glass that is found on beaches along oceans or large lakes that has been tumbled and smoothed by the water and sand into smooth frosted glass. "A lot of its attraction is nostalgia--wondering what it is and where it came from," said LaMotte. His book, with its beautiful photographs, presents some of the best sea glass ever collected.
A limited number of pre-released copies of Sea Glass Hearts, by author/artist Josie Iselin will also be available.
Jay Norris of Owings, Maryland will be on hand to share his hobby of creating colorful driftwood framed art out of his sea glass collection. Spending his life on the Chesapeake Bay collecting sea glass and shark's teeth, see how this hobby has turned pieces of frosted colored glass into amazing creations.
Sunday Conversations with Chesapeake Authors Series is funded by The Patuxent Partnership with support from the Holiday Inn Solomons. Sunday Conversations are free events and will also be hosted on February 19 and March 25 at 2 p.m. at the museum.

Chester River Runoff to Perform at the Ruark Boatworks

Cambridge, Md. --  The James B. Richardson Foundation, Inc. is presenting live music Wednesday evenings throughout the summer months on Cambridge Creek at the Ruark Boatworks, located at the intersection of Maryland Avenue and Hayward Street in Cambridge. The foundation requests a $5 donation for those 12 and older. Lawn seating only, bring chairs or blankets. Hot Dogs, nachos, snow cones, ice cream and drinks will be available for purchase.
The rain location for concerts is inside the Richardson Maritime Museum, 401 High Street in Cambridge. For more information on this live music series, contact Gladys Taylor at 410-221-1871, stop by the Ruark Boatworks or visit www.richardsonmuseum.org.
For harmonies, run away instrumentals and sheer delight, no one does bluegrass like Chester River Runoff. This group of enterprising young men from the Chestertown countryside have honed their musical prowess through hours of barn practice and miles on the road. Their repertoire goes well beyond the bluegrass standards to embrace homegrown material that reflects their Eastern Shore roots: call it eelgrass, call it bluecrabgrass, call it an incredible mix of fiddle, banjo, guitar, bass and vocals. Come hear them at The Ruark Boatworks on Wednesday, July 27 from 6 to 8 pm.
Many musical groups describe themselves as "a family." But in the case of Chester River Runoff, it's not a simple cliché. It's an accurate description. For nearly seven years they've been laughing, bickering, and making music together from their home on the Eastern Shore and up and down the East Coast. The band is known for shows that combine three and four-part harmonies and a mastery of the bluegrass idiom with the high energy of some of the more far-flung torch-bearers of modern acoustic music.
Says banjo player Sam Guthridge, "For the first few years we did our homework on traditional bluegrass until we got a handle on it, and then we moved on to doing our own thing. The time we spent really trying to toe the line on bluegrass traditions sets us apart from a lot of the bands we're compared to."
No strict traditionalists, the Runoff's original songs draw inspiration from all over the map, and their sets are sprinkled with covers from artists as disparate as Pavement and Waylon Jennings, as well as songs the band has mined from old field recordings.
Guthridge and guitarist Ben Armiger formed the band in the fall of 2004. After losing their original bassist and mandolin player, the pair did some searching and managed to convince bassist Marc Dykeman and ace fiddler Nate Grower to come along for the ride. Over the next 5 years, Dykeman and Grower became integral to the group, with Dykeman's rock-and-roll background livening up the mixture and Grower bringing the bluegrass chops that have enabled him to share the stage with some of the genre's legends.
Chester River Runoff now plays at numerous venues and festivals up and down the East Coast. With the release of their debut studio album "Blue Heron Farm," and a consistent drive to write, learn, and expand their musical horizons, more growth is on the way for the band.

Volunteers Sought to Help Eradicate Water Chestnut on the Sassafras

Kennedyville, Md. -- The Sassafras River Assocation and the Maryland Department of Natural Resources needs your help in eradicating Water Chestnut from the Sassafras Rvier. The invasive plant forms dense mats on the surface of water, which are often impenetrable for boats, swimmers, or waterfowl. Because Water Chestnut is not native to Maryland, it out-competes and displaces native vegetation, and provides poor habitat for other types of wildlife.
SRA and the DNR are hosting Water Chestnut Volunteer Workdays June 28 and 29 headquartered at the Turner's Creek Pavilion near Kennedyville, beginning at 9 a.m.
Volunteers will be asked to pull out Water Chestnut plants by hand in kayaks and canoes. If you have any information regarding location of the plants, please contact DNR Biologist Mark Lewandowski at 410-260-8634 or mlewandowski@dnr.state.md.us. If you are interested in volunteering, RSVP by contacting Jamie Brunkow, at riverkeeper@sassafrasriver.org  or 410-708-3303.

Upper Bay Noise Levels Subject of Public Hearing Tonight

Elkton, MD -- The Maryland Department of Natural Resources will hold a public hearing to discuss proposed new sound level limits for vessels using the Elk and Northeast Rivers and all tributaries including the Bohemia River and the C&D Canal. The hearing will be held at the Elkton High School (Room F-107), 110 James Street, Elkton, MD 21921 on Tuesday, May 24. The hearing will begin at 6 p.m.

The 90-decibel rule would still apply to older boats. Another proposed regulation would make cut-off switches that bypass or reduce the effectiveness of exhaust-pipe mufflers illegal.
Interested parties who have questions or wish to submit comments via e-mail may do so by contacting Mike Grant, Regulations Coordinator for Boating Services at mgrant@dnr.state.md.usor by U.S. mail to Mike Grant, Regulations Coordinator, DNR-Boating Services Unit, 580 Taylor Avenue, E-4, Annapolis, Maryland 21401 or by telephone at 410-260-8013.

St. Michaels, MD -- Beginning in June, the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum in St. Michaels, Maryland will offer novice and experienced boaters a chance to get out on the water along Fogg’s Cove in a selection of the museum’s beautifully crafted wooden sailing and rowing skiffs.
The Sailing Saturdays program runs June 11, July 16, August 13 and September 17 with two daily sailing sessions running from 10 am to noon and 1 pm to 4 pm. Boats used for the program range in size from 12 to 20 feet, and were crafted in the museum’s Apprentice for a Day public boatbuilding program. The boats are perfect for one to two people, with instruction provided for beginning sailors or boaters.
“For people interested in commissioning the museum to build one of these boats, this is a great way to ‘try before you buy,’” explains Boat Yard Manager Rich Scofield. “And for the experienced boater, this is a unique opportunity to enjoy sailing in some of the nicest, handmade wooden boats in the world.”
Boats in the program rotate from the museum’s collection, which includes Melonseed sailing skiffs, Rushton rowing skiffs and paddleboats. “You might event get to sail in the boat that appeared in the Failure to Launch movie as part of your experience,” commented Scofield.

Event to Feature Information on Lighthouses of Dorchester County

The Choptank River Lighthouse Society plans to build a replica of this screwpile lighthouse that once served the Choptank River. This photo is from the 1950s is presented courtesy of the Choptank River Lighthouse Society.
Cambridge, MD --  Have you heard about the wild, five-mile ride two keepers took -- inside the lighthouse? Do you know which well known Dorchester County family can claim the keeper of the original Choptank River Lighthouse? Have you heard the latest on the Hooper Island Lighthouse? Find out all this and more during the first-ever Lighthouses of Dorchester Town Hall Event on Saturday, May 7, 2-4 p.m. at the Dorchester County Visitor Center, 2 Rose Hill Place in Cambridge.
Guest speakers from the Chesapeake Chapter of the U.S. Lighthouse Society will share stories and history about lighthouses in the waters surrounding Dorchester County and throughout the Bay. Henry Gonzalez, Vice President of the national U.S. Lighthouse Society and former President of its Chesapeake chapter, along with Sandy Clunies, Chapter Historian, will present a fascinating slide show about these lighthouses. They will also describe their ongoing plans to preserve and restore the Hooper Island Lighthouse and how you can get involved as a volunteer.
Members of the Board of the Choptank River Lighthouse Society will also be on hand to give an update on efforts to build a replica of the former Choptank River Lighthouse on Pier A of the Cambridge City Marina. Wendy Brewer, author of "Keep Your Glow On," the just published, comprehensive guide to more than 800 U.S. lighthouses, will sign copies of her book.
“Lighthouses and lighthouse keepers are a very important part of the heritage of any maritime area, and Dorchester County is no exception, since it had both a screwpile lighthouse in the Choptank River and still has an operating caisson in the Bay,” said Gonzalez. “It’s vital to the success of any lighthouse preservation and interpretation activities that the local residents be active participants, so this Town Hall is a great opportunity for them to ‘come aboard!’”
This event is being organized by the Choptank River Lighthouse Society and the Chesapeake Chapter of the U.S. Lighthouse Society. Free and open to lighthouse enthusiasts and to anyone intrigued by the iconic symbols of our maritime heritage. Light refreshments will be served, courtesy of Paul's Subs. Seating is limited; please reserve your spot by calling 410.228.7977.

Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum to Host History Talks

Adam Goodheart is one in a series of four speakers in CBMM’s Spring Lecture Series, which begins this month and covers a variety of Civil War topics and historical figures.
St. Michaels, MD -- The Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum (CBMM) in St. Michaels, Maryland has announced a lecture series beginning this month and continuing through June. Held in the museum’s Van Lennep Auditorium, the 90-minute lectures cover a variety of Civil War topics and historical figures.
At 2pm on March 28, historian Dr. Kate Clifford Larson brings to life Civil War spy, abolitionist, humanitarian, and Underground Railroad conductor Harriet Tubman. Dr. Larson’s 2003 biography of Harriet Tubman, Bound for the Promised Land: Harriet Tubman, Portrait of an American Hero, was one of the first non-juvenile Tubman biographies published in six decades. Larson is the consultant for the Harriet Tubman Special Resource Study of the National Park Service and serves on the advisory board of the Historic Context on the Underground Railroad in Delaware, Underground Railroad Coalition of Delaware.
On April 6 at 2pm, USS Monitor Center Curator Anna Gibson Holloway of the Mariners’ Museum in Newport News, Virginia, shares the untold stories of the USS Monitor, with So Ends This Day: The Life and Times of the USS Monitor from 1861 to Yesterday. The lecture recounts the 1862 Cape Hatteras gale that ended USS Monitor’s career along with NOAA’s 1973 recovery operations of the “cheesebox on a raft.” Holloway also serves as vice president of museum collections and programs at the Mariners’ Museum.
At 2pm on April 8, Charles Mitchell brings to life the voices of the Civil War by using a collection of first-hand accounts, letters, diaries, journals and newspaper stories which focus on the divided loyalties of the Civil War in Maryland. Mitchell, a native Marylander and author of Maryland Voices of the Civil War, is an editor and travel writer in Baltimore. Mitchell earned a bachelor’s degree in history and political science from Pennsylvania State University, and a master’s degree in international relations with an emphasis on Soviet politics from the University of Maryland.
The last session in the lecture series, beginning at 6pm on June 3, features Adam Goodheart, author, teacher, and master historian, as he shares the dramatic and little-known story of how a courageous group of slaves at the beginning of the Civil War launched a revolution by the shores of the Chesapeake––a revolution that would ultimately lead to Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation. The story unfolded 150 years ago, in May and June of 1861. Goodheart is the author of 1861: The Civil War Awakening, to be published in April 2011. He is a regular online columnist for the New York Times Civil War series, “Disunion” and teaches American studies and history at Washington College.

CBMM to Host Castelli's Watermen Art

Looking for the Brass Ring / Vicious Virgin, 2006. [22 x 30] © Marc Castelli, The Simison Collection.
St. Michaels, MD (Jan. 18, 2011) -- The Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum (CBMM) in St. Michaels, MD, will present Marc Castelli: The Art of the Waterman, The Simison Collection in the Steamboat Gallery, January 31 through March 25. This exhibit will feature 23 paintings by renowned Chesapeake artist Marc Castelli, 17 of which were donated to the Museum from the Diane Simison collection. The remaining images are from the artist’s personal collection.
Castelli paints in watercolor on paper, working from photographs that he takes himself. This allows him not only to get the proportions and details exactly right, but it allows him to capture action and attitude that painting from life would not permit. Castelli goes out at times in awful weather—cold, wind, rain, even snow—conditions in which no one could paint. He then photographs the watermen's work in the full variety of conditions that they work in and takes those pictures back to paint in his home studio.
Diane Simison began collecting Castelli’s work in 2004. "Diane quite deliberately built this cohesive collection of Marc’s paintings of Chesapeake watermen because she was captivated by the aesthetic value," commented CBMM Chief Curator Pete Lesher. "But she was also drawn in by Castelli’s approach and message: going out on the boats with the watermen to capture aspects of their work and the hardships they face. Her chosen location for retirement on Tilghman Island, with its large community of watermen, certainly must have played a role in attracting her to this subject matter."
The exhibit is open to the public daily from 10 am- 4 pm and is free with Museum admission. For more information, visit cbmm.org or call 410-745-2916.

Boat Show Brings Baltimore Warm Thoughts and the Best Deals

Baltimore, MD (January 14, 2011) -- The Baltimore Boat Show coming to the Baltimore Convention Center later this month offers Chesapeake Bay boaters a once-a-year opportunity to shop for the best in boats, gear and accessories. A recent Foresight Research report confirms that boat shows are the only place consumers can compare different boats, models and prices from multiple dealers and view and board the boats – all under one roof.

The Foresight research also finds that:
  • For those who attended a boat show, the boat show had the most influence on their decision to buy a boat (57% ranking 4 or 5 on a 5 point scale) versus their experience at a dealership (54%) and the Internet (47%).
  • Buyers said boat shows have the most influence during the interest/consideration phase of the purchase process. Boat show attendees often “discover” brands they may not have known about.
  • Nearly six in ten new boat buyers (57%) attended at least one boat show in the 12 months prior to buying their boat.
  • Nearly 20% of new boat buyers were first introduced to their dealer at a boat show.

“The Baltimore Boat Show is the most effective and fun way to compare boats and visit with a number of boat dealers all in one place. There’s no better way to get a great deal, while getting up close and personal with some of the region’s best and newest boats,” said show manager Tara Davis. “Whether you’re a long-time or novice boater, spending a day at the show will make sure you’re ready to hit the water just as soon as the boating season starts later this year.”

The recreational boating industry’s leading trade group, the National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA), which produces the show, reports that there's pent-up demand for boats and hopes to find buyers come out this year given signs of economic recovery and growth in consumer spending.

The NMMA notes an estimated 66 million Americans who went boating in 2009 increased the time they spent on their boats by four percent, demonstrating boating’s popularity despite the recession. In fact, the NMMA says nearly one million Americans (933,000) bought a powerboat in 2009. Eighty-two percent were pre-owned and 18 percent new versus a normal 72 percent pre-owned indicating people are buying and want to go boating but are choosing what they perceive to be a more value-oriented approach. Manufacturers are responding by offering more value priced new boats in 2011, a number of which can be financed for less than $250 per month and can be found at the show’s Affordability Pavilion.

What’s more, the most recent data from NMMA shows that boating is still big business in the Chesapeake Bay area. The Delmarva area generated $785 million in boat and related sales in 2009 alone and is home to more than 505,000 registered boats.

The Baltimore Boat Show boasts the best in boat shopping, but also offers fun attractions and educational opportunities for boaters of all ages. Visit with Russell Newberry from Discovery Channel’s Deadliest Catch, who will be available daily to meet and greet fans. Brush up on your boating and fishing skills with free seminars from the pros at the Annapolis School of Seamanship, Chesapeake Bay Magazine and the Recreational Powerboating Association. For those with a competitive spirit, try your hand at Saturday’s Crab Pickin’ Contest to win great prizes from Crab Shanty or our Nautical Challenge Trivia Competition to win a 2011 Sea Doo GTI 130 jet ski and trailer package valued at $10,000 from Pete’s Cycle Co. All boaters can appreciate the nautical craftsmanship of long-ago days through an extensive display of vintage boats and motors by members of the Chesapeake Bay Chapter of the Antique & Classic Boat Society.

There’s also plenty to see and do for your youngest boaters, who can join in on the fun by learning their nautical knots, boat navigation and other boating skills through hands-on sessions or interacting with marine life on the Fishmobile. Don’t miss special appearances by SpongeBob Squarepants as well as a visit by special guest marine biologist and Shark Week expert Andy Dehart.
